The Job: The Researcher and Project Manager will serve as the primary researcher and project manager of a federally funded project to investigate the impact of a museum-based, community health-focused experience on adolescent youth of Chicago. A particular focus will be placed on the intersection of ethnic identification and cultural background with the experience. This includes designing studies, analyzing data and preparing publications and presentations. This role will also oversee logistics, communication, budgeting and coordination of the project with two partner institutions. 

This is a full-time benefits-eligible position that is funded for 3 years. Conference travel and publication costs are supported. Limited relocation costs are available. 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead mixed-method research studies in support of the project’s core research questions, including methodological design, qualitative and/or quantitative analysis, data collection, and reporting.
  • Support partner institutions in qualitative data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • Manage and coordinate documentation, budgets, timelines, reports, intra-team communication and other logistics related to a large, federally-funded research project.
  • Represent the Museum at professional conferences.
  • Prepare scholarly publications as lead and supporting author.
  • Participate in the Museum’s Institutional Review Board.
  • Support the Museum’s Research and Evaluation team on other projects.
  • Participate as team member in assigned working groups and on various Museum teams.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards and support equity in all team projects and activities.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in science education, learning sciences, educational psychology, anthropology, human and adolescent development, health policy or similar field. A Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) is a plus.
  • Intermediate knowledge of social science statistics.
  • Proven experience independently designing and executing research studies.
  • Must have at least two (2) first-authored scholarly works. We prefer at least one to be published or submitted to a peer-reviewed publication.
  • Experience working with populations that are diverse in ethnicity, cultural heritage, language, gender identity, educational background and socio-economic status.
  • Experience working in out-of-school settings, a background in race and ethnic identity theory, experience with SPSS or R, and/or ability to speak Spanish are preferred.
  • Strong collaborator who works well independently or on team projects and who can work well with other experts by being able to give and receive positive criticism, take on a wide variety of roles, respect deadlines and support a friendly and jovial environment.
  • Appreciation of diversity in both thought and experience is a must.
  • High level of initiative and exceptional problem solving skills.
