Exhibit Assistant

The Exhibit Assistant works together with the Manager, Live Organisms to maintain all aspects of the live organism displays in the Genetics and Farm exhibits.  The Exhibit Assistant is responsible for the exhibit animals and plants, on a schedule that includes both weekend and weekdays to be determined together with the supervisor.  This position, together with the Lead Exhibit Assistant and Manager, Live Organisms ensures the health and well-being of the animals as well as the quality of the live organism displays seven days a week.


  • Prepares hatching chick displays; inspects eggs, monitors animals and removes newly hatched chicks at night.
  • Prepares fish embryo, worm and fly displays.
  • Monitors daily all animals’ health and habitats.
  • Maintains breeding populations of zebra fish.
  • Maintains breeding populations of fruit flies.
  • Feeds all animals and monitors water supplies of all mammals.
  • Plants seeds and maintains plant displays.
  • Monitors and adjusts conditions in aquaria and other animal habitats.
  • Regularly cleans and disinfects animal habitats.
  • Tracks stocks of supplies and orders as necessary.
  • Maintains animal care records and other records.



  • 2-3 years’ work experience with a minimum 1 year experience working with live animals and/or plants.
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university is a plus
  • Must have superior analytical, attention to detail, written and verbal communications skills, and exceptionally good professional judgment.
  • Excellent trouble-shooting skills; demonstrated ability to work independently with little to no supervision as needed.
  • Must be able to work within a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Clear sense of responsibility and very high degree of reliability

Additional skills and experience:

  • Experience working with baby chicks, rodents and frogs a plus.
  • Experience working with specialty organisms, including fruit flies, and zebra fish a plus.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor equipment problems
