The Job: The Science Leadership Initiative (SLI), housed within MSI’s Welcome to Science Initiative, supports the aspiration that every child attends a school that demonstrates an exceptional teaching and learning environment for science by building the capacity of administrators, Teacher Leaders, and school communities.


The Senior Educator will actively contribute to the development and implementation of new and existing SLI programming (School Partners Program—including alumni engagement—and the STEM Network). The primary focus of this position is to build the capacity of participants in the Science Leadership School Partners Program (45 teachers and 45 administrators at 45 K-8 schools throughout Chicago and the region) to lead a change process and make science a whole-school priority.



  • Serve as a consultant and mentor to Teacher Leaders and administrators in the School Partners Program and support their efforts to build commitment and engagement of their school teams.
  • Coordinate and monitor the progress of School Partners using data obtained from the School Support Tool and other formative evaluation processes.
  • Facilitate engagement of participants in the School Partners Program with the STEM Network website and discussion forums to curate and manage content as well as develop strategies to strengthen the ongoing professional learning community.
  • Develop and deliver professional development and leadership training for Teacher Leaders and administrators in using the research-based School Support Tool to facilitate a whole-school change process—including techniques for leading meetings and procedures for creating and implementing action plans.
  • Provide user training and support for School Partners in the use of all SLI digital products, including the School Support Tool digital portal and STEM Network website.
  • Collaborate within the SLI team to:
    • Develop, refine, plan, and deliver programming for the Science Leadership School Partners Program and Teachers Leaders and administrators.
    • Cultivate and facilitate an ongoing professional learning community of Teacher Leaders, administrators and alumni of the School Partners Program in the ongoing professional learning community.
    • Plan, organize, and lead two large gatherings at MSI which support the learning and celebrate the accomplishments of School Partners.
    • Recruit, select, and onboard one cohort of 15 schools each year for the School Partners Program.
  • Identify, remain current in, and apply best practices in teacher education, science education, and school leadership for elementary and middle school students and teachers.
  • Partner with various departments across MSI to evaluate programs and raise awareness of and generate interest in SLI and other Welcome to Science programs.


  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in science, education or related discipline and 5+ years related experience and/or training
  • Experience leading professional development for teachers and administrators, including coaching, consulting, and/or mentoring
  • Experience supporting teachers’ implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • Understanding of and experience with formal and informal education programming in a variety of settings including schools, science centers, and/or other museums
  • Demonstrated professional capacity in digital technologies used in education for creating content and team collaboration—for example, Microsoft Office, Google G Suite, WordPress, and Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas)
  • Ability to travel to and from school site visits around the Chicago region
  • Ability to work approximately ten evenings per year
  • Ability to support democratic dialog and shared leadership around science education within school communities 
  • High degree of initiative, independence, and tenacity: ability to identify and prioritize actions towards a goal; proven track record managing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Contribute to a collaborative, congenial, and professional team environment: exhibit creativity, enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility, and openness to new ideas; be able to give and receive positive criticism
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation) and experience communicating with diverse audiences
  • Racial and cultural competence—an understanding of the role of race, culture, class and power in the inequities of the school system
  • Teacher Leadership experience—for example, grade-level lead, district committees, instructional leadership team, etc. a plus
  • Experience working with school-level administrators a plus
  • Experience connecting nonprofits with schools to support science or STEM programming or to provide learning experiences for students and teachers a plus
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish a plus
