The Job: The Sr. Manager of Government and Foundation Giving is responsible for managing the foundation and government fundraising team to secure financial support for all museum priorities, including annual support needed to support the museum’s budget.  This role oversees a team responsible for approximately $3,000,000 per year in major gifts as well as $300,000 in annual fund gifts.


  • Staff the Vice President in all matters related to identification, research, strategy, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of “top of the pyramid” foundation prospects. These foundations live within the VP’s portfolio with a line to the Sr. Manager.
  • Lead the foundation and government fundraising agenda by managing relationships with foundation and government partners, creating greater awareness of MSI’s mission; prepare senior and volunteer leadership for engagement with these partners.
  • Work with city, state and federal agencies to remain aware of upcoming RFPs and identify possible funding opportunities; and to leverage government relationships for museum-related events and causes.
  • Work closely with Director of Corporate Giving and Sponsorships relative to Corporate Foundations, proposals and all related tasks.
  • Directly manage the core activities for foundation and government fundraising including identifying, cultivating, and stewarding donors, developing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, impact reports (including synthesizing technical research and evaluation reports), and other essential communications; and projecting, tracking, and reporting contributed income.
  • Collaborate interdepartmentally (education, finance, facilities, etc.) to align MSI’s priorities, needs, and programs with funder’s objectives, and to ensure accurate presentation of information.
  • Develop and direct the comprehensive foundation and government strategies for stewardship; collaborating with external affairs colleagues as possible.
  • Represent the museum at meetings and events related to foundation and government relations.
  • Provide direction to the government and foundation giving coordinator on supporting the development of letters of inquiry, grant proposals, impact reports and other essential communications.
  • Provide direction to the government and foundation giving coordinator on a comprehensive prospect research strategy.
  • Create, maintain and adhere to a calendar of proposal and reporting deadlines.
  • Manage the budget for government and foundation giving.
  • Arrange, coordinate and facilitate government-related site visits as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree with at least seven (7) years’ related experience with at least four (4) years’ management experience
  • Management-level experience and with demonstrable skills successfully preparing proposals to government agencies and foundations, goal-setting and assessment.  Exceptional “people skills” including an ability to communicate in a dynamic, engaging way is required.
  • Demonstrated experience securing and managing government and foundation grants; setting informed development goals and creating participation and follow through on grant activities is key. 
  • Experience in seeking out new foundation relationships, directing the cultivation and stewardship process.
  • Teamwork is a highly valued qualification.
  • High integrity team player; results-driven and organized. 
  • A self-directed and resourceful person. The successful candidate will be a poised individual who is supportive, diplomatic, personable and able to manage multiple priorities. 
  • A person who is extremely focused with high energy and a quick mind, and having the confidence to build upon the Museum’s relationships with government agency and foundation staff is essential.
  • Extreme focus to comply with government and foundation guidelines and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability building strong and sustaining giving programs.
